Tonics and Twisted Chasers was released initially as a limited-edition fanclub-only vinyl LP. The following year, it was released in an unlimited CD edition. The album was primarily recorded by principal songwriters Robert Pollard and Tobin Sprout.

"Jellyfish Reflector" (also a GBV live album) was referenced in the Homestar Runner short "Sbemail 150?!?"
