Tongzhou District (Simplified Chinese: 通州区; Traditional Chinese: 通州區; Hanyu Pinyin: Tōngzhōu Qū), located in southeast Beijing, is considered as the capital's eastern gate. It is at the north end of Grand Canal and the east end of Chang'an Avenue. Tongzhou is 37 km wide from east to west and 48 km from north to south, covering an area of 906.27 square kilometers which accounting for 5.55% of Beijing's total territory and 14.3% of Beijing's plain. Tongzhou has 11 towns and 4 communities, with a population of 870,000.

Tongzhou has a long history of more than 2200 years since its foundation in Xihan (western Han) Dynasty. Relics unearthed in Tongzhou indicates that human beings had lived here as early as the Neolithic Age; In 195 BC, Liu Bang, the first Emperor of Xihan dynasty, set up the county here; In 25 AD, the first year of Donghan dynasty, the emperor Liu Xiu renamed it as Lu County; In 1151 AD, when the ruling power was the Jin dynasty, the emperor--King Hai Ling set up a new feudal province and renamed County Lu as Tongzhou since the Chinese character Tong could fully describe the importance of the Great Canal in transportation; In 1914, Tongzhou was renamed Tong County; In 1997, it was, by the State Councilis confirmation, renamed Tongzhou and became one of the districts in Beijing.

Tongzhou is neighbored by Tianjin and Hebei province, at the core of Bo Sea Economic Circle. It is new to CBD, 13 km to International Trade Center, 20 km to Tian'anmen Square, 16 km to the Capital International Airport, and 110 km to Tianjin New Harbor.

Tongzhou lies at the east end of Chang an Avenue axis and n me canMr of me East Development Belt II is both the sustainable development zone and an important site for strategic transferring of development focus of Beijing. It is supposed to take on an essential role in the function of a new district and develop into the sub-center of the captical.

Double belts:East Development belt from Huairou. Miyun in the north with the focus on Tongzhou and Yizhuang; West Ecological Belt includes Yanqing. Changping, etc.

Multiple centers: the comprehensive service zones including CBD, Olympic Garden, and Zhongguancun: the new towns like Yizhuang and Yongle of Tongzhou within the Double Belts.

Beijing lies in the northern plain of China, with a decrease in altitude from the northwest to the southeast.

It is surrounded by mountains in the north, west and east, facing a vast stretch of open plain in thesoutheast. Tongzhou is situated on this plain area with even altitude averaging 20 meter.

Beijing is in the mild temperate zone and has four seasons that are clear cut from each othenannual temperature averages 11.3'C and its annual rain amounts to about 620 millimeters.

Tongzhou abounds in water resources. There are altogether 13 rivers, big or small, including the Grant Canal, River Tonghui, River Wenyu, River Liangshui, and River Chaobai, with a total length of 245kilometers. The forestation coverage is 46% in Tongzhou.

The character Tong' in Chinese means smooth connection and free transportation, and Tongzhou is famous for its convenient transportation. Five main roads including Beijing-Tongzhou Expressway and BaTong Lightrail, connect Tongzhou with the downtown of Beijing; the Sixth Ring Road brings Tongzhou and the other suburbs of Beijing together by easy communication; seven highways of Beijing lead out almost to all parts of China, and 3 of them run through Tongzhou, namely Beijing-Shenyang Highway, Beijing-Harbin Highway, and Beijing-Tianjin-Tanggu Highway. Beijing-Chengde and Beijing-Qinghuangdao railways also meet in Tongzhou. Besides, the Seventh Ring Road, Subway Line Five, Beijing-Shanghai High speed Railway, and Beijing-Tianjin commuter train are also under construction.

Tongzhou will focus on modern manufacturing industries as opto-mechatronics, environmental protection equipments, automobile components, and strengthen high-tech industries like new materials, biological engineering and encourage the development of urban industries including food processing, garments production, furniture manufacturing, etc. There are 7 industrial zones with a total area of 64 square kilometers in Tongzhou.

Tongzhou will exert great effort in developing modern agriculture with its special emphasis on vegetable planting, orchard planning and aquatics. Besides, it aims at developing the seeding agriculture, and new agriculture that can profit from the market economy and the tourism.

Tongzhou will construct modern shopping center and comprehensive business center along the street promoting ornate materials of building, flower market, market of green agricultural products in order to turn the central city a center of consumption. The downtown site is supposed to grow as a prosperous trading center.

Tongzhou promotes vigorously the merger of the tourist industry and the cultural construction with a view to becoming a tourism and culture center in east Beijing by exploiting muftifaceted resources of the Canal and bringing out relevant souvenirs. In this way, the scenic spots of the Canal and the suburb scenery can be introduced worldwide to create an aroma of Human tourism and brand name in the line of tourism.

Tongzhou will also bridge a platform for delivery, distribution, manufacturing, storage and information processing by virtue of ports in Beijing and Tianjin. It will give great priority to the development of modern distribution of commodities to stride in the direction of connecting with metropolis, and becoming influential in the Bohai economic circle with a view to contributing to the distribution center of Northeast China and North China in east Beijing.

Tongzhou district is basically composed of one central city, five towns, which form two corridors, namely the Industrial Development Corridor along Jing-Jin-Tang Highway, and the Urban Development Corridor from the central city to Xiji.

The new Beijing district is neither the copy of the old city nor the satellite city in the common sense. It will be a city of medium size with millions of population that is rationally proportioned. It should be the terminal of new industries and modern manufacturing industries. It will shoulder some important function of the capital, and it is suitable for inhabitation. It is an important cultural and tourism center in east Beijing. And it is a hub of communications in north China, an important distribution center and a modern trade center.
