[edit] Biography
Little is known about Wiseau's early life or family background. He has an unidentifiable, allegedly European accent, and it is known that he spent his youth in Europe[citation needed], but he avoids saying exactly from where he emigrated. He prefers to make it known that he is now an American [1], and that he speaks three languages. He acknowledges that his surname is similar to the French word oiseau, which means bird in English.
However, it must be pointed out that nothing to date in this skeletal biography can be confirmed including his alleged American nationality or his date of birth (reportedly October 3, 1968).
At some point, Wiseau moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, where he was trained in acting at the American Conservatory Theater, Laney College and the Jean Shelton Actors Lab. He has also received acting training at the Vincent Chase Workshop and the Stella Adler Studio of Acting in Los Angeles, California. Before casting himself in his own films, he appeared as an actor on television and on stage.
In 2003, Wiseau released his first film, The Room, which was based upon his play and novel by the same name. Wiseau is credited as an actor (in the leading role of Johnny), an executive producer, the writer, the producer and the director. The Room has developed a cult following in Los Angeles, where it continues to have monthly midnight screenings.
In 2004, Wiseau released a documentary film called Homeless in America.
Future prospects for Wiseau include a sitcom called The Neighbors, a book about the differences between 35 mm film and high-definition video, and a Broadway adaptation of The Room.
