Tommy Boy Records

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tommy Boy Records is a record label started in 1981 by Tom Silverman. After borrowing $5,000 from his parents, the label was an outgrowth of his Disco News bi-weekly publication (later entitled Dance Music Report), which spanned fourteen years, beginning in September 1978.

In 1985, Warner Brothers Records bought 50% from his label, but he bought those shares back in 1996. In 1995 a joint venture Penalty Records was created with Neil Levine, but it was absorbed by Tommy Boy in 1999. The imprint Tommy Boy Gospel was launched in 1998 under the direction of Max Seigel and Marvie Wright.
