Tomie dePaola

Tomie dePaola is a U.S. author and illustrator of many children's picture books, including the Strega Nona and Meet the Barkers series.

He was born on September 15, 1934 in Meriden, Connecticut. After high school, DePaola attend art school at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. He graduated in 1956 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.

DePaola then worked as an art professor at Newton College of the Sacred Heart for four years, he moved to California where he taught at San Francisco College for Women and received a Master of Fine Arts degree from California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, as well as a doctoral equivalency from Lone Mountain College in San Francisco. From 1972 until 1979, DePaola taught numerous colleges in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

DePaola currently resides in New London, New Hampshire with his four dogs. DePaola is the proud owner of four Welsh terriers, Madison, Markus, Morgan, and Moffat, whom appear in his Meet the Barkers series.
