Tom has come through the ranks with Middlesbrough, he was a member of their FA Youth Cup winning side in 2003/04.

Tom made a breakthrough into the first team when he appeared as a substitute in the final game of the 2005/06 season against Fulham having already scored 20 goals for the reserve team.
