Tomás Mulcahy

Tomás Mulcahy (born 1963) is a former Irish sportsperson who played hurling with Cork in the 1980s and 1990s.

Tomás Mulcahy was born in Cork in 1963. He played club hurling with Glen Rovers from an early age, where he followed in the footsteps of such great players as Jack Lynch, Christy Ring and Jim Young. His skills were quickly noted and Mulcahy joined the Cork minor hurling side in 1980. Two years later in 1982 he came on as a substitute in the victorious Cork side that won the All-Ireland Under-21 Hurling Championship. He made his senior debut in a challenge game against Waterford in a full forward line that included Jimmy Barry-Murphy and Seánie O'Leary. Mulcahy later became a star in championship hurling, winning six Munster Championship medals which translated into five All-Ireland Hurling Final appearances. Of those five Mulcahy ended up on the winning side on three occasions in 1984, 1986 and 1990, when he captained the Cork team.

Mulcahy was also an accomplished Gaelic footballer, playing at minor and under-21 levels with Cork. He came on as a substitute in the 1985 Munster Final and had the formidable task of marking Páidí Ó Sé. For Mulcahy, however, hurling was his first love. He won virtually every honour in the game of hurling before retiring in 1995, including captaining his club, Glen Rovers, to a County Championship title in 1989 - their first in thirteen years. He also won a National Hurling League medal with Cork in 1993, as well as Railway Cup medals with Munster in 1984 and 1985.

Since retiring Mulcahy has become a media personality, appearing as a panellist on The Sunday Game. He also remained involved in underage hurling circles in Cork, as a selector of the under-21 hurling team of 2005. It was also reported that Mulcahy was interested in succeeding Donal O'Grady as manager of the senior hurling side in 2004.
