Tollard Royal

Tollard Royal is a small village on Cranborne Chase, seven miles south-east Shaftesbury, in Wiltshire, England. The 'Royal' of the name refers to the royal hunting lodge that was used for hunting on the Chase. There is an ancient Quaker burial ground near the village.
Famous sons include General Pitt-Rivers, the founder of modern archeology, who lived in the village and undertook many improvements there at his own expense. Cecil Beaton rented Ashcombe House between 1930 and 1945.
Famous current residents include the pop-star Madonna, who lives with her family on the nearby 1,132-acre Ashcombe House Estate, which she purchased in 2002 for £9-million. She is building a recording studio in the six-bedroom Grade II listed Georgian house. The Ashcombe estate is still run as a working farm estate.
