Toll Rail, commonly Toll, is the only long-haul railway operator in New Zealand. Headquartered in Auckland, it is the main trading division of Toll NZ. It operates on over 3,898 km of track.
The company was formed in 2003 when Australian transport giant Toll Holdings purchased an 85% stake in Tranz Rail Holdings. In January 2004 the company's name was changed to Toll NZ Holdings and a new board was installed.

Toll is a large transporter of West Coast coal on the spectacular Midland Line. The company is also a major transporter of auto parts and completed vehicles. It operates intermodal container trains. It is also a large transporter of fertilizer, steel, timber] and milk.
Along with freight, Toll also operates two passenger service divisions - Tranz Scenic and Tranz Metro.
According to its 2003 Annual Report to Investors, Toll had more than 4,000 employees, 140 locomotives, and 4,000 wagons (freight cars).
