Toledo Mercurys
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Toledo Mercurys are a former International Hockey League franchise of Toledo, Ohio that played over the years from 1947 to 1962. The Mercurys were known as the Toledo-Marion Mercurys in '55-'56, and as the Toledo-St. Louis Mercurys for the '59-'60 season. During the 1949-50 season, the team was known as the Toledo Buckeyes, and they participated in the Eastern Amateur Hockey League.
Interestingly, during the 1948-49 season, the team played as the Mercurys North in the IHL North Division, and as the Mercurys South in the IHL South Division, because the team owners wanted to play more games. The Mercurys North won the J.P. McGuire Trophy that year by capturing the IHL North title.
The Mercurys won Turner Cup championships in 1948, 1951, and 1952.
Due to a lack of fan support, the team folded after the 1961-62 season. IHL ice hockey returned to Toledo in 1963, with the Toledo Blades franchise.
