Douglas Todd Staples (born August 24, 1963) is an outgoing Republican member of the Texas Senate, having represented District 3 since 2001. This East Texas district comprises all of Henderson, Anderson, Cherokee, Nacogdoches, Shelby, Angelina, San Augustine, Sabine, San Jacinto, Polk, Tyler, Jasper, Newton, and Hardin Counties, along with a southwest portion of Smith County and the northern portion of Montgomery County. [1]

He will give up his senate seat at the end of the Seventy-ninth Texas Legislature because he was elected as the Texas agriculture commissioner on November 7. [2].

Senator Staples was unopposed for the Republican nomination for agriculture commissioner. He defeated Democrat Hank Gilbert, and Libertarian Clay Woolamin the fall 2006 election. He won with 54.75 percent of the vote, a margin of some 545,000 over Gilbert.
