Tobita

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Tobita Red Light District飛田遊廓 ) is the name of the largest brothel district in western Japan.

Osaka Nishinari-ku

Tobita is a surviving brothel district located in the Sanno 3-chome area of Nishinari-ku, Osaka. The Tobita district had been one of the largest police sactioned redlight districts in Japan until 1958, when anti-prostitution laws went into effect. Since that time, it seems to have still been business as usual for the brothels in the area, however, they operate largely under the guise of being "Japanese-style restaurants".

Tobita is interesting as a tourist attraction, in that unlike other brothels, the girls are visible from the street. Much like brothels in Amsterdam, where women are displayed in windows, Tobita sees a girl on display in the entrance area of each establishment. Dressed rather demurely, a young girl waits kneeling in the "genkan" or entrance of the brothel to attract customers.
