Toast Nightclub

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Toast is a nightclub in the Civic Centre of Canberra. It opened in mid 2002, with Bryan Fitzpatrick as manager. It holds the regular club nights Lithium, UG Beats, Cheese On Toast and Chrome. Toast is also the home of many weekly events including a Monday night tango group and a Wednesday salsa dancing group. Toast also runs as a live music venue and has been host to many local and touring bands.

Lithium is Toast's longest running club night and one of Canberra's most consistently large nights [citation needed]. Lithium was started in October 2002 and has run monthly ever since making it Canberra's longest running alternative club nights. It plays a mixture of alternative music from the early punk classics through to the alternative music of today. The official Lithium web page can be found at http://lithium.4mg.com/. Lithium is held on the first Friday night of every month.

UG Beats is a regular club night, which was started by Alistair Erskine (DJ Alistair), Rhys Bower and Tim Ruyg (Timbokchoy) in winter of 2002, originally at Areebar (later named The Church Bar), but relocated to its current surrounds when the music policy of its former home changed. The change from The Church to Toast initially saw lower attendances, but in time the following grew to even greater numbers. Its past and present resident DJs have included Mezla, Bec Paton, Miss Universe, Jemist, Pornstylus and Radge. Currently it is one of Canberra's most popular club nights and now into its 5th year, making it the longest running club night in Canberra. UG Beats is held on the first Saturday of each month.

Cheese on Toast is a retro night, playing pop music from the 1960s to the 1990s. Since its start in March 2005 it has become one of Toast's most popular nights. Cheese On Toast is run monthly, most often on the third Friday of the month.

Chrome is a monthly 'goth' night, usually held on a Thursday, but occasionally a Friday or Saturday, late each month. It enjoys modest crowds on the Thursday night events, with the months where it is on a Friday or Saturday attracting larger turnouts, as would be expected. The most successful Chrome so far attracted around 320 people on Saturday the 28th of October 2006. While the main music focus is on goth and associated genres, the night appeals to a wider audience among the alternative scenes.
