The Rt. Hon. Sir Toaripi Lauti, GCMG, was born Toalipi Lauti in 1928. He was the chief minister of Tuvalu from October 2, 1975 to October 1, 1978. When Tuvalu became independent, he was appointed as its first Prime Minister until his replacement on September 8, 1981, as a result of his alleged involvement in an investment scandal. More recently, he was the Governor-General of Tuvalu, representing the British monarch as head of state, from October 1, 1990 through December 1, 1993.
