TNA Lockdown

This page is about the wrestling event. For other meanings see Lockdown (disambiguation)

Lockdown is the name given for professional wrestling pay-per-view events held by Total Nonstop Action Wrestling in the month of April. The first one, in 2005, used the revolutionary premise that all matches were to take place in the Six Sides of Steel, which is set to be the standard for future Lockdown Pay Per Views.

[edit] A Major Event

The original premise was to have a couple of quality cage matches to highlight the gimmick name "Lockdown", but TNA President Dixie Carter changed her mind and switched the format to the now-famous all-steel cage match show. Due to the gimmick it is set to be one of TNA Wrestling's crown jewel pay per view events.

Lockdown has so far served to be a major event, as in 2005 it featured several high quality gimmick matches that restored TNA's streak of quality pay per view events, including a match of the year contender in the main event, which featured AJ Styles taking on Abyss for the #1 Contendership to the NWA World Heavyweight Title. 2006 was no different, as many big name wrestlers returned to the company for the event. Also, Christy Hemme made her debut at the event. Three huge "bumps" took place at Lockdown 06. One being Chase Stevens executing a Shooting Star Press from the cage, another being Christian Cage hitting a frog splash from the cage on Abyss, and the last being AJ Styles diving from the rafters onto the roof of the cage, and through a table on Chris Harris. Many fans see Lockdown as TNA's answer to the WWE's Survivor Series.

[edit] Lethal Lockdown

In 2005, Director of Authority Dusty Rhodes appointed the first ever Lethal Lockdown match, a match often considered a cross between WCW's "Bunkhouse Brawl" and "Wargames" matches. The premise of the match is that two teams will face off for supremacy in a cage match where weapons are legal, anything goes, and you can only win by pinfall or submission.

Two men will start off in the cage, one from each team. After five minutes, the first extra competitor will come out (dependent on a coin toss in the back). Every subsequent two minutes another contender will enter the ring as both teams alternate until every man has entered the cage, at which point the door is locked and will not be opened until a winner is declared.

The first Lethal Lockdown match featured Jeff Jarrett, Monty Brown, and Kip James against Diamond Dallas Page, Sean Waltman, and B.G. James. Kevin Nash was meant to be in the matchup, but due to a staph infection had to withdraw, leading to James being inserted as the surprise replacement. Page, Waltman, and James won the match as Waltman rolled up Monty Brown for the pinfall victory.

The second Lethal Lockdown match featured Jeff Jarrett, Scott Steiner, and America's Most Wanted against Sting, Rhino, A.J. Styles, and Ron Killings. The difference between this match and the original is that this time there was a roof on the cage with a variety of weapons attached. The roof lowered during the match, once every participant had officially entered the ring.

[edit] Xscape Match

In 2005, Dusty Rhodes also appointed the first ever Xscape Match, which consists of four men competing for a shot at the TNA X Division Title. Eliminations occur by pinfall until only two men remain, at which point the objective changes and the first man to escape the cage wins.

The first Xscape match saw Shocker defeat Chris Sabin, Matt Bentley, and Sonjay Dutt. Shocker pinned Sonjay Dutt, Chris Sabin pinned Matt Bentley, and Shocker narrowly beat Sabin over the cage and to the floor to win the match.

The Xscape Match returned in 2006 and featured Chris Sabin vs. Elix Skipper vs. Petey Williams vs. Shark Boy vs. Puma vs. Chase Stevens. Sabin picked up the win.

[edit] Lockdown 07

An online petition has been started by Chicago wrestling fans, requesting Lockdown 2007 to be held at UIC Pavilion in Chicago.
