TNA 2003 Super X Cup Tournament

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 2003 Super X-Cup Tournament was the first X-Cup tournament, hosted by Total Nonstop Action Wrestling. It featured eight X Division wrestlers; four from the United States and four from the rest of the world; separated into US and international brackets as appropriate. The countries represented in the international bracket were Mexico by Juventud Guerrera, Canada by Teddy Hart, the United Kingdom by Jonny Storm, and Japan by Nosawa. With the exception of Jonny Storm, all four of these would also go on to represent their country in the 2004 World X-Cup and America's X-Cup. In addition, two of the USA wrestlers, Jerry Lynn and Chris Sabin, would be the captain of Team USA in the 2004 and 2006 World X-Cups respectively.

The entire tournament was contested at TNA 60, which was taped on August 27 and aired September 3, 2003. Every match is also collected on the DVD The Ultimate X Collection.

[edit] Aftermath

After winning the tournament, Chris Sabin decided to put his Super X-Cup trophy on the line for a shot at the X Division Championship. Sabin faced off with the champion at the time, Michael Shane, at TNA 64; Shane retained his title and won the trophy, though Sabin is still officially considered the Super X-Cup champion.
