"Tizzun" is a word used in Southern Italian dialect (Naples Region)to mean those pieces of wood in a fire that will not burn (they just turn black). This word is used in the U.S. as a racial slur to refer to African Americans. The earliest use in the media might have been in Spike Lee's Do The Right Thing.John Turturro utters it during his rant. "Tizzun" did not likely originate in Southern Italy as a racial slur.(Until recently, there has been very little migration to that region from Africa) It is a word that has existed for many generations there. It was most likely used by Italian immigrants in the U.S. to refer to blacks and was then popularized by the media.
