It also has 300 printing units, 100 embroider units and 200 other units like compacting, raising and calendering units. Tirupur's hosiery factories are profitable successes, small jewels in India's economy. (It is one of the largest foreign exchange source for INDIA).
The transformation of Tirupur into this hosiery machine over the last couple of decades has had a downside. Its water sources are either hopelessly polluted by the hosiery factories or have dried up altogether, unable to keep up with the demand. For some years, Tirupur has had to truck in water for its residents, at a substantial cost. The infrastructure in the city is very poor, and various projects are underway to improve city infrastructure. One of these projects, just commissioned in 2006, is an innovative private/public partnership that has brought water and sewerage connections to the businesses and homes in the Tirupur area.
Due to the congestion in the town, New Tirupur has been developed 12 km from the town.
Apart from surge in development, the health condition of the people here is deteriorating quickly due to the high amount of pollution. Many severe disease such as asthma, brochititis, and sleeplessness affect the people very badly. Recently, there has been an outbreak of the wide spread endemic disease AIDS in the town due to the sexual illiteracy among the workers and the majority of the teen-aged girls and boys working during the night shift hours in the knitting garments factories. The disease spread in the town is heading top the list in worst affected cities in Tamil Nadu. Many health rehabilitation programs have been organised by Government of Tamil Nadu and many private agencies to open the eyes of the people.
Apart from all these, garment industries are very eager to facilitate with IT infrastructure with very latest technologies in both Hardware and Software. Nowadays, all are expecting the ERP based packages like SAP, to run their business. For the first time in garment, Network Clothing Company introduce, SAP system for their business, for all units.
