From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Timothy M. Chan (born 1976) is a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Waterloo, where he currently holds a University Research Chair.

He graduated with BA (summa cum laude) from Rice University at age 16, and completed his Ph.D. in Computer Science at UBC in 1995.

He has won the Governor-General's Award of Gold Medal (as Head of Graduating Class in the Faculty of Graduate Studies at UBC), the NSERC Doctoral Prize for best dissertation, and the Premier's Research Excellence Award (PREA) of Ontario, Canada.

His research focuses on computational geometry. Among his many contributions, he is best known for his algorithm on convex hull (often referred to as Timothy Chan's Algorithm or simply Chan's Algorithm). He has given a number of invited lectures, notably in DIMACS, MSRI, Max Planck Institute for Informatics, and more recently in the NHC Workshops of Japan.

He is an associate editor of the International Journal of Computational Geometry. Beginning 2007, he will join the editorial board of two other leading journals in the field: Discrete & Computaional Geometry, and Computational Geometry: Theory and Applications.

Chan was born in Michigan. Both of his parents were physicists.
