[edit] Overview

Music has always been a significant and reliable representation of the social and cultural attitudes of its audience. This was never truer than in the 70’s, where music was almost a way of life in itself. Today, many remember the 70’s as a time of great change and evolution in the music world and this is rightly so. It is credited as being the Era in which genres such as rock, country and reggae developed and gained a firm hold in the music world, and the era in which such genres as glam rock, alternative pop, jazz rock, progressive rock, punk music and most notably disco were spawned.

Several musical groups also emerged in this decade whose music still remains hugely popular today. These include in the field of progressive rock the bands Yes and Pink Floyd, in disco; The Village People and Bee Gees, in Reggae; Bob Marley and the Wailers and in rock The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Queen, KISS and many more. Funk also emerged as the dominant black musical style of the day with bands like Earth, Wind and Fire, Sly and the Family Stone, and the highly influential Parliament-Funkadelic leading the charge. In Australia the music scene was really picking up, with such bands as AC/DC, Icehouse, Cold Chisel, Midnight Oil and the Skyhooks. The industry flourished and Australian musicians were becoming increasingly more recognised on the world scene.

The seventies were a time of great social change and this was reflected in the music. Environmentalism still held momentum from the 60’s, Feminism was becoming more influential and gay rights was also becoming more widely recognised and accepted. Several groups adopted these movements as central themes, most famously The Village People, who had such hits as ‘YMCA’ and ‘In the Navy’.
