[edit] Summary
In 1975 Tim Field left Staffordshire University with a First Class Honours degree in computing science. He worked in that discipline for nineteen years, until he experienced workplace bullying first hand as a Customer Services Manager. He suffered a consequential breakdown in 1994. In 1996, while still suffering post-traumatic stress disorder, he founded the UK National Workplace Bullying Advice Line. From the thousands of calls he received, Field realised that there was a generic pattern in all bullying cases. He identified that pattern along with the characteristics of people who bully and people who are bullied, and documented it in his book "Bully In Sight" (1996) and its companion web site Bullyonline. He also built on the work already done by another workplace bullying pioneer, Andrea Adams, who died in 1995. His anti-bullying work earned him the respect of countless people. He died from cancer in January 2006 aged 53. A more complete biography can be found here
[edit] Bully In Sight Book
First published in 1996 with the long title "Bully In Sight - How to predict, resist, challenge and combat workplace bullying" received accolades from those it was primarily intended to help - targets of workplace bullying. These comments are taken from the back cover
- "Bully in sight is a Godsend. I think you're the only person in the world who really understands what happens when you're bullied at work..."; and
- "Extraordinary... rarely in my life have I read a book with such impact."
The first part of the book defines bullying and bullies over 10 chapters; the second part focuses on how to challengs and combat workplace bullying, with such chapter headings as "unmasking the bully"; "Standing up for yourself" and "recourse to law".
[edit] Follow Up to Bully In Sight Book
Tim Field was about half way through writing a follow up book to Bully In Sight when he died. In this book he develops some ideas further than Bully In Sight. It seems likely that this incomplete book will be published in 2007.
[edit] Bullyonline Website
Tim Field's Bullyonline website continues to be maintained and developed. It claims to be "the world's largest resource on workplace bullying and related issues", and that claim is not thought to be disputed. Field also began an Internet discussion group of the same name with membership in 2006 numbering some 1500.
