Australian commandos operate a radio on a mountain top in Timor, in about November 1942. They are, (left to right): Signaller Keith Richards, Cpl John Donovan and Sgt Jack Sargeant, all from the 2/2nd Independent Company, which was part of Sparrow Force.

After Japanese forces invaded Timor in February 1942, Allied forces on the island were cut off from their bases in Australia. Signalman Joe Loveless manage to build a makeshift wireless, "Winnie the War Winner", which was powerful enough to contact Darwin. However the signallers' identity was challenged. Eventually a signal officer in Darwin sent back a message saying: "what is the Christian name of Jack Sargent's wife?" Sargent was the signaller at the Timor end, and he sent back the message "Kathleen", which established the credentials of the senders. (Photographer: Damien Parer).
