Tiger kidnapping

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A tiger kidnapping is the term given to a kidnapping done in order to aid in a robbery. It is called a tiger kidnapping because of the predatory stalking that precedes it. In a tiger robbery, a key person from an organization or a family member of that person is kidnapped/taken hostage until the crime has been executed.

This usually involves:

  • Establishing a key member of an organisation to be the victim
  • Studying the victim
    • Work start time
    • Work finish time
    • Access to robbery target e.g. bank safe, security codes
    • Route to and from work
    • Security at victim's home
    • Family members residing in victim's home
    • Relationship with family members to be used as persuasion
  • Studying the target of the robbery itself

[edit] Why is this technique used

Today, with modern crime prevention technology, more and more, human beings are becoming the the weak points in an organisations defences.

The kidnappers/robbers use psychology against the organisation's employee, using the value they place on their own life and the lives of other endangered family members against the loyalty they have towards an organisation they work for that is insured against theft.
The value placed on the well being of a person over monetary value of what stands to be stolen is the key to the success of this type of crime.
