[edit] Welcome

Welcome to my user page. Although I've been reading Wikipedia articles since October of 2005, my first (anonymous) edit wasn't until the 21st of February 2006, on the article of my hometown Yarragon, Victoria. Soon after I created an account as User:Swithun B, but on the 25th of March I changed this to Thylacoleo, the generic name of Australia's marsupial lion (motivated by the fact that (1) I'm Australian, (2) my star sign is Leo, and (3) I've been interested in taxonomy and palaeontology from a young age). Please feel free to contact me on my discussion page.

[edit] About me

I was born and raised in West Gippsland, in the east of the state of Victoria, and later lived for six years in nearby Melbourne, doing undergraduate studies (specialising in physics, French and Japanese) at the University of Melbourne. I'm currently at the Australian National University in Canberra studying for a PhD in linguistics. My interests include: languages and linguistics (obviously); science (both in general and many of its specific branches); history (particularly, but not exclusively, mediaeval history); geography (and all kinds of maps); genealogy (my family tree so far includes over 90,000 people); classical music (although I can't play an instrument); and architecture. (This may seem a lot, but there are some notable omissions in that list.)

[edit] Work on Wikipedia

My long-term aim is to expand and improve Wikipedia articles on topics to do with Gippsland, although this may take a while, as I'm somewhat careful about finding reputable sources for information before making substantive edits. I'm also one (no doubt among many) who prizes good spelling, grammar, and readability, and will occasionally make edits to improve Wikipedia in this respect.

I'm currently working on a project to add articles on the history of local government in Victoria, which hopefully will see the light of day within a couple of months.

Name of this article

  • The name of this article was agreed upon after several months of discussion and careful consideration and application of Wikipedia policies and guidelines relating to naming articles (specifically WP:NC, WP:NC(CN), WP:NCON and WP:DAB). Be aware that Wikipedia does not assert that the entity that is the subject of this article has any right to use the name "Catholic Church"; we merely note the fact that they do use that name.
  • The choice of name for this article is explicity not intended to imply that any other Wikipedia articles related to the Catholic Church or Catholicism should be renamed. Do not rename any articles related to the Catholic Church or Catholicism without first achieving a consensus to do so.
  • The name of this article is not intended to imply that either the term "Roman Catholic Church" is discouraged or the term "Catholic Church" is preferred in Wikipedia articles. Do not change any instances of the terms "Roman Catholic Church" or "Catholic Church" in any Wikipedia article without a clear rationale and the consent of the editors of that article.
