Thunar is a the file manager shipped with the as yet unreleased 4.4 version of Xfce. It is being developed by Benedikt Meurer, initially to replace the aging Xffm.

The goals of the Thunar project are ease of use and accessibility using Assistive Technologies (i.e., Gnome Accessibility Project). Another goal is high performance; however, maintainability comes before performance. Just like the rest of Xfce, Thunar is designed to comply with standards ([1]), such as those stated at freedesktop.org[2]. Thunar is extendable with plugins [3].

Thunar is named for the god Thor.

[edit] Interface

The Thunar interface was developed prior to building the Thunar core. A minimally usable software "mockup" was built in Python iteratively adding features and changing UI elements reflecting test user input. Thunar tries to build a UI that is distinct from the myriad tree based file managers in the Unix world.

[edit] API

Thunar provides an API for third party developers. The thunar-vfs provides a rich cross platform API for high level file system operations. thunarx provides a library for building extensions to the file manager itself.
