Three Peaks Race
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Three Peaks Race is a short-handed sailing and mountain run event held in Tasmania, the southern-most state of Australia, over the Easter long weekend. The first race was in 1989.
The Three Peaks Race is a non-stop event, commencing at Beauty Point just north of Launceston on the Tamar River, during which runners are transposted by yacht:
- 90nm to Flinders Island (settlement of Lady Barron) in Bass Strait where two runners proceed to the top of Mt Strzelecki (65km run; 756m ascent);
- 145nm to Coles Bay where two runners scale Mt Freycinet (33km run; 620m ascent); and
- 100nm to Hobart on the Derwent River where two runners top Mt Wellington (33km run; 1270m ascent), and finishing in Hobart.
The race course is approximately:
- Sail: 335 nms;
- Run: 131kms;
- Ascent: 2646m.
The concept of the race is similar to the British Three Peaks Challenge. The Tasmanian race was inaugurated in 1989 after a team competed in the 1987 British event.
