Thou Art a Vineyard

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thou Art a Vineyard (Georgian: შენ ხარ ვენახი, transliterated: Shen Khar Venakhi) is a Medieval Georgian hymn, written by King Demetre I (Demetrius I) of Georgia (1093-1156 A.D.). The hymn is dedicated to Georgia, the patronage of Virgin Mary and the hymn is also a prayer to praise Mary by the Georgian Orthodox Church.

Thou Art a Vineyard is mostly sung by chorus without any classical instruments and it is a classic example of the Georgian choral music.

Compistionally, the hymn is characterized as very polyphonic and resembles the late Medival traditions of Georgian Renaissance.
