Thorney Close

Thorney close is a suburb of Sunderland. Leading down from the Durham road past Farringdon bordering onto Grindon and the outer areas of Sunderland. It is quite a large and highly populated estate, being home to exactly 4500 people, which the majority live in council houses. The estate has 3 shopping arcades, a community centre, 3 pubs, a recently built residential home for the elderly, three Methodist churches, and a primary school. It recently had a community school, which was knocked down and rebuilt in Grindon.
It was built in the 50s, as part of the huge Sunderland city council expansion act, which the land like Farringdon had been purchased from farmland. The estate boosted to its maximum extent in the 80s, now a rebuilding act has taken place, and many new houses and apartments have been constructed.
All the streets in Thorney close begin with the letter "T". Such as, Telford Road, Thames Road, Thorney Close Road, Taunton Square, Tadcaster Road.
