Thomas Stanley (1625-1678) was an English author and translator. Born in Cumberlow, Hertfordshire, he was educated at the University of Cambridge and subsequently embarked on a legal career. Having published translations of poetry from the original Greek, Latin, French, Spanish and Italian, he began his great work, The History of Philosophy (London,Humphrey Moseley and Thomas Dring) in 1655, and it was released in three separate volumes, first in 1655, second in 1656, and a third in 1660. The third was intended to be the final, but a fourth was released in 1662. He has sat for at least 15 famous portraits, one of which was by Sir Godfrey Kneller (1646 to 1723).
