Thomas Savage

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thomas Savage (1463 - 1508) was an English Clergyman.

In 1493, he was elected Bishop of Rochester, a post he held till 1497 when he was elected Bishop of London.

His last post was as Archbishop of York from 1501 - 1507 in which capacity he was responsible for the marriage ceremony of Arthur, Prince of Wales, eldest son of Henry VII, to Catherine of Aragon. Arthur died young and his brother Henry, who became Henry VIII, then married Catherine.

Between 1502 and 1507 he had built the Savage Chapel at St. Michaels, Macclesfield. It was built as a chantry chapel. The three storey porch has the shields of Rocester, London and York - the three places where Thomas Savage was a bishop before becoming an Archbishop. This chapel now belongs to the Marquis of Cholmondeley.

Thomas Savage is buried in York Minster where his effigy can still be seen, however his heart is buried in Macclesfield from whence his family came.
