Thomas Mavros

Thomas Mavros (Greek: Θωμάς Μαύρος) (May 31, 1954 - ), was one of the best strikers that ever played in Greece. Mavros holds the record in the Greek championship with 260 goals in 501 games. His nickname was simply "God".
Starting his stunning football career in 1970 with the club of Panionios and he was traded to AEK Athens FC in 1976. He immediately became the club favourite helping the team winning two championships (1978 and 1979) and one cup 1978. He was also an integral part in the memorable 1976-77 team that reached the Uefa Cup semi-finals. Later he returned to Panionios in 1988 where he finished his career in 1991. He had a total of 36 appearances with the Greece scoring 11 goals in the period of 1972-1982.
Thomas Mavros was the classic striker that could move quickly in the opposing area, take very strong shots, was smart with the ball and could bring chaos to defenders. He finished top scorer four times: in 1978 with 22 goals, in 1979 with 31 goals (third in Europe), in 1985 with 27 goals, and in 1990 with 22 goals.
