Thomas Gregson, (Thos.)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thomas Gregson (Thos.) is a fictional character in the novels of P.G. Wodehouse. He is the cousin of Bertie Wooster, the son of Agatha Gregson, Bertie's Aunt Agatha. Thomas is a typical Wodehousian teenager with a high opinion of himself and a low opinion of others, especially his cousin. Though vociferous in her dislike of her nephew Bertie's lifestyle, Agatha frequently leaves Thomas with Bertie, who grudgingly does his duty by his cousin. Bertie always takes good care of him, lest Aunt Agatha blame him for not "looking after" son properly.

In a short story, titled The Love That Purifies, in the collection Very Good, Jeeves, Thomas behaves impeccably, acting out of character, much to the surprise of Bertie and the chagrin of Aunt Dahlia. This bet is a by-product of the "Good Conduct" contest, devised by Mr Anstruther, promising the winner (Bonzo Travers or Thomas), a prize of five pounds. He keeps track of the boys' standing by awarding marks: twenty per day for perfect behaviour, subtracting marks for offenses according to their severity. Aunt Dahlia bets that Thomas will crack before her son Bonzo. Eventually, Jeeves reveals the cause of his reformed behaviour, namely, that he is in love with Greta Garbo, and therefore, is trying to be worthy of her love. Aunt Dahlia wins the bet when Thomas accidentally empties a bucket of water on Mr. Anstruther, causing him to award the five pounds to Bonzo. The the real object of the bucket of water was Sebastian Moon, a boy with "golden curls", who dared to speak disparagingly of Garbo.
