Thomas Cochrane, 1st Baron Cochrane of Cults

Thomas Horatio Arthur Ernest Cochrane, 1st Baron Cochrane of Cults (2 April 1857-17 January 1951) DL JP LLD was a Scottish politician and nobleman.
The second son of Thomas Barnes Cochrane, 11th Earl of Dundonald, he was educated at Eton. He was an Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel of the 4th Battalion Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, and served in the 93rd Highlanders and the Scots Guards. He served in South Africa, where he was Deputy Assistant Adjutant-General. He was a Lieutenant-Colonel of the 2/7 Black Watch from 1914-1916.
He sat as Unionist Member of Parliament for Ayrshire North from 1892-1910. He was Parliamentary Private Secretary to Rt Hon. Joseph Chamberlain and served in the Balfour government as Under-Secretary of State for the Home Department from 1902-1905.
He married Lady Gertrude Boyle OBE, daughter of George Boyle, 6th Earl of Glasgow. They had three sons, amongst whom Air Chief Marshal Sir Ralph Cochrane, and one daughter.
In 1919 he was raised to the peerage as Baron Cochrane of Cults. He was succeeded by his son, Major Hon. Thomas George Frederick Cochrane DSO.
