Thomas Bosschaert
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Thomas Willeboirts Bosschaert (1613-1656) was a Dutch painter, born in Bergen op Zoom. He was educated under Segers in Antwerp, where then resided some of the greatest masters of the Flemish School. Having greatly profited there, his instructor advised him to visit Italy for further improvement. After a residence of four years in Rome, he returned to the Low Countries, and acquired a reputation no less high than merited.
His style nearly resembles that of Vandyck, both in history and portrait. His colouring is extremely tender and harmonious, his touch is free and spirited, his heads are graceful, and his finishing is often exquisite. Hence his works, though placed by those of Rubens and Vandyck, are still admired as noble specimens of the Flemish school.
Bosschaert died at Antwerp.
