Uma (Played by Smriti Irani): Uma is a 27 year old middle class girl from a basti of mill workers whose survival depends on the Jajodiya Mills. Her father Manohar Apte is a Trade Union leader. Her younger brother Sanjay too is a Trade Union activist. Her mother Girija is a home maker. And her sister Namita is a student.Uma has a positive countenance, she sees an opportunity in every adversity. She supports her family after her brothers death - she is the anchor of her family. She inspires hope even in the midst of defeat and portrays everything as positive no matter how adverse they are.Uma is the face of an average middle class Indian girl whose life constantly oscillates between despair and hope, fear and dreams. Her fears keep her rooted to the ground, but her dreams and aspirations keep her searching for a little piece of her own space, her own sky -THODA SA AASMAAN
Uma's life changes drastically when she is married into the Jajodiya family. A girl from a humble basti suddenly finds herself in the middle of unimaginable riches. But everything has a price. And Uma has paid the price by unknowingly marrying a schizophrenic Sudhanshu. And then, Uma becomes Durga. She begins to fight for her husband's life and health by first curing him of his schizophrenia and then fighting for his right in the property. And once Sudhanshu is cured and realises how he was drugged from childhood to become a schizophrenic and understands how his brothers have been exploiting the workers and depriving them of their right, he joins Uma in her fight.
Manohar: Uma's father Manohar, affectionately called Bhau Saheb is a head clerk in a mill. He is also the leader of the Trade Union and revered by one and all.
Girija: Uma's mother Girija, affectionately called Tai Amma, is a housewife who supplements her husband's meager income by rolling papad or making pickles for an organization called Shakti.Namita: Namita is the younger sister of Uma who is still in school. She is 16 years old.
Sanjay: Uma has a younger brother Sanjay - who is the short tempered heir apparent to the trade union leader's throne. The father and son are always at logger heads but have lots of love for each other. Sanjay dies early in the plot as he is murdered. He is Sapna's love interest.
Sapna: Uma's neighbour hood friend Sapna, 22, is an aspiring model. She believes in the good life and feels no guilt in using her glamour and guile to get what she wants. She loves Sanjay.
Pooja: Uma's friend Pooja, 22, is the exact opposite of Sapna. An introvert, she comes across a girl from another century - so pious, innocent and pure. But is she really?
Fakir: Fakir, 27, is a frustrated Urdu poet who makes and sells kites for his daily bread. He writes his beautiful, revolutionary poems on his kite so that when they fall into the hands of someone, he or she may read his poems and get inspired. A dedicated Trade Union worker, Fakir recites his poetry at Trade Union meetings to encourage the workers. Unknown to Uma, Fakir secretly loves her.
Munna: Munna is a small time reluctant extortionist who always threatens to leave his profession and start an honest life. He is also secretly in love with Pooja.
Gondya: Gondya is a stocky 35 year old Dalit drummer. He is a sweeper who plays drums like no one does. No birth, no worship, no ritual, no wedding, no funeral, no workers' meeting is complete without Gondya's drums. He is in his senses only when he is drunk.
