[edit] Restructuring

I am restructuring the page. hence there will be few hitches. Please bear with this and note that this is not vandalism. Since I have a very slow, unreliable connection, I may not be able to complete the work and is at the mercy of the internet connection to complete a para I have startedDoctor Bruno 16:34, 2 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Ayyavazhi

Can some one throw more light on the issue of Ayyavazhi being added and removed again and again Doctor Bruno 17:54, 19 December 2005 (UTC)

User:Vaikunda Raja is the one who keeps adding info on Ayyavazhi to every article related Tamil or Hinduism. My paternal native place is Ettayapuram and maternal native place is Thoothukudi and have relatives spread acros Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi districts. In my 25 years, I've never even heard of a religion called Ayyavazhi. So much for notability. If anything, it could be a belief system with localised following. I would disagree if it were to be claimed as a full-fledged religion. Someone even claimed that it has a following of 0.12% of the Indian population implying 12 lakh followers. Seriously, all this is hard to believe without solid references. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 03:50, 20 December 2005 (UTC)
I have so far seen one person (a shop keeper in a village called Puthiamputhur in Ottapidaram Taluk in Thoothukudi District) who is a follower of Ayyavazhi religion. They have a local festival every year at some place near Kanyakumari. And I do not think that there are a lot of people associated with that. Doctor Bruno 17:23, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

From this year the Vaikunda Avataram, (March 4th, 20th of Tamil month Masi) was announced as a Holiday for the districts of Tirunelveli and Tuticorin and already a leave for Kanyakumari dist. Is this possible without a reasonable number of followers across these areas. But surprisingly, one thing is pity that this belief system was unknown to the outer world so far, and still out side wikipedia. - Vaikunda Raja 21:11, 5 April 2006 (UTC)

Oh, interesting. Are you sure, they recognised it as a separate religion? Because, I've known about local holidays for Memaruvattur Athi Parasakthi-related festivals in other parts of the state. Anyway, I give you the benefit of doubt. But, you have to read Wikipedia:Cite sources, Wikipedia:No original research, WP:NPOV etc., to understand wikipedia's policy. Because, you've said that unfortunately, "it's not known outside wikipedia." This is not acceptable as Wikipedia is not a primary source of information. Being an encyclopedia, it's a tertiary source. It's upto you to act accordingly. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 03:55, 6 April 2006 (UTC)
It was not still recognised as a seperate religion but sure that holidays announced for the three districts. thats all. - Vaikunda Raja

[edit] Citation

The district administration of Tirunelveli has announced local holiday on March 4 in view of the birth anniversary of `Ayya Vaikunda Swamy.' A statement said all government establishments and schools would remain closed. However, banks would function normally and sub-treasuries would be working with minimum workforce. To compensate this holiday, government establishments would function on May 13. [1] As a gazetted government officer, now working in Thoothukudi District, I can tell you that there was a Local Holiday in Thoothukudi District on that occassion (though the Hindu citation only talks about Tirunelveli District. This is for your information. Remember that even I was initially skeptical about this few months ago. of late I have learned that just because I do not know something it does not mean that it does not exist Doctor Bruno 17:39, 7 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] My opinion

In my opinion, It does not matter whether they need to recognize this as a seperate religion or not. The point of contention was whether "Thoothukudi district is one of the districts with Ayyavazhi followers". And now it seems that at least the local administration (District Collectorate) acknowledges this fact and hence declares a local holiday like what we have for Nellaiappar Car festival, Panguni Uttiram, Vaiksai Vishakam, and the Feast of Lady of Snows (matha thirunaal) in Thoothukudi. Hence I feel that it is right to add the sentence that "Thoothukudi district is one of the districts with Ayyavazhi followers" Can I have the opinion of others

It was not of the mistake of User Sundar or others who told that there (in Toothukkudi) is no such religion at all, but one or two. There were many reasons for that. They will remain hard to be identified. See Ayyavazhi#Phenomenology. And in the matter of citation I think you are right - Vaikunda Raja 18:08, 7 April 2006 (UTC)
