Thitu Island (or Pagasa in Filipino) is the second largest island in the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea. The territory is contested by Viet Nam, China, Taiwan, Philippines and Malaysia. Currently claimed by the Philippines, it has a landing strip (Rancudo Airfield) with two commercial flights weekly and a small harbour. There are 100 inhabitants, mostly military, fishermen and weathermen. A view of the island shows the landing strip apparently covered in sand - and taking up a disproportionately large amount of area of the island. [1]
