Thirsk and Malton will be fought for the first time at the UK general election in 2009 or 2010. Estimates of the constituency's behaviour in the 2005 general election place it as safely Conservative. On November 18, 2006, Thirsk and Malton Conservative Association unexpectedly {http://blog.appgifs.org.uk} chose Anne McIntosh (sitting MP for Vale of York) as their candidate in preference to Ryedale's sitting MP John Greenway.
