Petrified wood

Petrified wood, such as this sample found in Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona, United States, is a fossil wood where all the organic materials have been replaced with minerals, while retaining the original structure of the wood. The petrifaction process occurs underground, when wood becomes buried under sediment. Mineral-rich water flowing through the sediment deposits minerals in the plant's cells and as the lignin and cellulose decay, a stone cast forms in its place.

Hi bellman, and welcome to Wikipedia. Thankyou for finding the time to sign up and contribute to our little project. If you're in doubt about anything, you might want to check out some of these pages:

It's also a good idea to sign the new user log and add a little about yourself. When contributing to a talk page, you can sign your name by typing four tildes after your comments, like this: ~~~~. [edit] Cyclone Tracy

Nah, not a problem if you want to put it back in. I just took it out because it didn't exist and I thought the content was covered in one of the World War II articles. If you create it, the best name would probably be something like 1942 bombing of Darwin but as it is a wartime event I may be wrong on that. Best thing to do would be integrate the details into one of the WW2 articles and link to that. -- Chuq 08:26, 1 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Hi bellman, I'd prefer to keep the stub notice on this article until we can make it a "featured suburb". It could be that "stub" is the wrong work, however. - Ta bu shi da yu 09:03, 6 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Hey, I'm going to keep it out of the article. Consensus (if you can say two people form a consensus!) is that it should be left out. - Ta bu shi da yu 13:57, 8 Oct 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Spanish Translation

That sounds like an interesting project. That article has some rather advanced sentences, and some of the sentences that would be formed by the English translation might be awkward in an English article about this subject. Howevver, I will definitely help in whatever way I can. Academic Challenger 05:48, 24 Oct 2004 (UTC)

The hope is that this spawns more translation efforts, between all of the different major languages. The bellman 05:59, 24 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for your invitation to translate bellman. I did a translation but fortunately Chamelon retranslated and he did a good job. I think I need more skill. Best regards--Jondel 11:15, 25 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Cheers also for the invitation to help on the Spanish translation. Going through it now and it seems more or less very well translated :). Hauser

Thanks for the invite; the translation seemed pretty much complete, but there was definitely room for improvement in the English. I did some, there's still a bit more left to do (and in the Spanish version too, I think). @alex 02:43, 2004 Oct 26 (UTC)

Sorry, but I won't be able to do any work these days as I will have very little free time till mid-November or even December. Sabbut 19:08, 28 Oct 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Wotcher

Work at USyd, involved in left groups in Sydney, hang out with the latin american dance crew at UNcle. I'm happy to have my POV on APESMA changed, but APESMA has a reputation as an appeaser, a bosses' union, an inactive union, a "Professional association" with the historical connotations, a union opposed to industrial action in principle, a scab union (doesn't go out when the others onsite do), and a poacher (see for instance the AMWU's ambit in re engineers and other kindred professions). In terms of direct dealings, I know that APESMA does poorly by its student members. Happy to have my POV (and its obviously POV) countered. yours cordially, Fifelfoo 02:42, 8 Nov 2004 (UTC)

AMWU versus APESMA: Personal conversation with a mate of mine who was a worker (qualified and registered engineer) and union member. Left uni with an APESMA student membership conversion. On the basis of his experience, and recommendations from more senior engineers who were militants, went for the manufacturing. As far as the AMWU's ambit, see their white collar division section on their website. Obviously after this conversation I'll investigate more. Only problem is this kind of demarkation disputes don't get published in Workers Online etc.Fifelfoo 03:18, 8 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Demarkation disputes: the Australian Industrial Relations Commission and state equivalents are meant to only register one union per industry. However, over time, the AIRC has shown a willingness to register unions representing, "All workers in the industry of hopping on the left foot while shearing a sheep," and then another union with, "All workers in the industry of hopping on the right foot while shearing a sheep." Sometimes there's more than two appropriate unions, for example, CPSU, NTEU, APESMA, HREA (now HSU, mostly kicked out of the sector), LHMU, NUS, AMWU, IEU, AEU, CFMEU, ASU (Services) all have some rights to enrol members working in industries which produce full-time education. It was even more of a mess before the great ACTU / ALP driven union mergers of the 1980s and 1990s. Fifelfoo 04:25, 8 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Union: I chose the NTEU (my options were NTEU or CPSU). NTEU is an industrial union, its left wing, not ALP affiliated, not over run with faction fights. NTEU has excellent representation of casuals and general staff (the category when I started). NTEU does alot about being member driven, and was the workhorse behind the three strikes in the recent Enterprise Bargaining Agreement round. The NTEU branch has a rather good reputation. [edit] Tri-lingual translation of the week

Hi bellman,

Thank you for correct my user page! The text was bizarre – since I wrote it, I learned more about English.

About the camera, I don't have one, and even if a got, I lived in metropolitan region of São Paulo, not necessarily in the centre... I'll try to find a picture with sufficient resolution to print, but I'm more focused in finding something about the northeastern sertão.

The tri-lingual translation is a great idea. The pt Wikipedia has lots of articles translated from en, so it's hard to find articles about Latin America even there! I'm working in pt:Carnaval, and other specific themes about our people needs urgently to be developed. I think the project you're proposing could force the development of these articles. I'm on it. Marcelo R. 15:39, 11 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Hi Bellman, I made the Portuguese translation of your proposal. And I put it in your user space, hope you don't mind. Also I'm talking with people on pt about the project, too. C-ya, Marcelo R. 14:12, 12 Nov 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Wikinews demo up and running

Hi!

I'm writing to let you know that the Wikimedia Board of Trustees has approved the first stage of the Wikinews project. There's now a fully operational English demo site at demo.wikinews.org. This will be used for experimenting with various review models and basic policies before the site is launched officially in about a week. demo.wikinews.org will become the English version later.

You voted for the Wikinews project, so I'm asking for your participation now. Everything is open, nothing is final. What Wikinews will and can be depends in large part on you. There already is a global Wikinews mailing list for discussing the project. If you are interested at all, please subscribe -- coordination is of key importance. There's also an IRC channel #wikinews on irc.freenode.net. Realtime discussion can help to polish up articles.

If you're looking for something to do, check out the articles in development and articles in review. Or start a new story in the Wikinews workspace, or ignore the proposed review system - it's up to you. I hope you'll join us soon in this exciting experiment.--Eloquence* 01:58, Nov 17, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] es to en

There's lots of good material in Spanish. I translate about one or two a week myself. Have people been having trouble finding articles worth translating? I made a couple of suggestions myself, but usually when I find things worth doing, I just jump in and translate. If it would be useful for me to come up with a list of articles worth translating, I'm sure I could come up with at least a dozen, probably more. -- Jmabel | Talk 08:26, Nov 19, 2004 (UTC)

a list like that would be great. The bellman 08:28, 2004 Nov 19 (UTC)
OK. They won't all be "featured", but they'll all be decent articles. Frankly, I haven't seen any sign that being "featured" in the Spanish Wikipedia means that the article is particularly good. -- Jmabel | Talk 08:30, Nov 19, 2004 (UTC)
so, what do you think of the notice board idea? The bellman 08:34, 2004 Nov 19 (UTC)
Feel free, but since I don't routinely log in to meta, I'd never see it on my watchlist, so I would never notice any changes to it. -- Jmabel | Talk 08:36, Nov 19, 2004 (UTC)

I've made considerable additions to the list. Let me know if you need even more, but I think this should be a decent pool. -- Jmabel | Talk 05:13, Nov 21, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Wikireader

Bellman, I've started slowly editing the articles and checking them, as opposed to expanding the stubs. If you'd like to do one or two a day to attempt to get some progress done, I'm marking each one this way (Lyellin checked). Thanks! Lyellin 01:30, Nov 27, 2004 (UTC)
Trust me... I'm the same way... wikinews (trying to be an admin), wikijunior I'm watching over a bit... some Pittsburgh articles here, and this wikireader... plus I'm just beginning an outline of one that will prove quite hard (will have inate POV issues)... I understand. But I'll bug. Lyellin 03:28, Nov 27, 2004 (UTC)
I like that idea a lot. I'll start doing that on the ones I've checked tomorrow. Also make sure to make it on the reader page, so we can keep track there. great idea though. WIsh I had thought of it. Lyellin 06:25, Nov 27, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Red Ensign

Hello Bellman,

I really like the Australian and New Zealand Flags alot. Their respectively National Flags (Blue Ensigns) are both elagant and beautiful designs (in my POV). I also love their Red Ensign counterparts,

Australia Red Ensign(Merchant Ensign of the Navy)

http://flagspot.net/images/a/au-red.gif

New Zealand Red Ensign (Merchant Ensign of the Navy)

http://flagspot.net/images/n/nz_civil.gif

Proposed 1964 Canadian Red Ensign (Possible new National Flag)

http://scaa.usask.ca/gallery/flagdisplay/images/web/panel13-3.jpg

I really love this "Star Constillation" theme. The Australia and New Zealand Red Ensigns have the Southern Cross, and in kinship the (proposed) Canadian Red Ensign has Big Dipper.

I sincerely hope that the Red Ensign page will become unlocked someday, and your contributions Bellman, would be a true pleasure to read.

Sincerely,

[edit] Quechua

Hi, Bellman! I have just read your message about the Quechua wikibook, because I haven't been around here for a long time. Thanx for ringing your bell to me with your suggestion. My main problem both right now and in general is lack of time but your message's been a truly nice surprise. Interesting thing, the Quechua wikibook. Too many interesting and pithy things everywhere in Wikiworld! As one of my friends told me in a really difficult time of my life "This world is beautiful because is diverse". That could be said as well about Wikiworld, and that diversity is one of the things that help me in difficult moments. I'll try and see if I can help when I get some time. [edit] How to get to an interwiki redirect

Ah, now you understand some of the bad things about interwiki redirects. You need to manually construct a url with &redirect=no at the end in the browser address bar, in the case of your wikibooks user page, it's at http://en.wikibooks.org/w/index.php?title=User:The_bellman&redirect=no . You'll also need to do it for your talk page at http://en.wikibooks.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:The_bellman&redirect=no . Gentgeen 09:47, 21 Jan 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Wikinews Romanian articles

I'm glad to hear you like the info on Romania! [edit] Wikinews Workspace war!

What's your opinion on how the Workspace should, er, work? Amgine wants all stories to be listed at once on the front page, so other people start editing them. When we last tried that I found people were clicking red links and beginning to write articles I was already writing from scratch, just hadn't finished (so not saved) yet. This gave biiig edit conflicts. What's your opinion? Dan100 11:09, Jan 23, 2005 (UTC)

PS you should get proper user pages over on Wikinews! :)

[edit] he to they

Hi bellman, I found your conversion of "he" to "they" http://en.wikibooks.org/w/index.php?title=Gardening&diff=next&oldid=88553 . Besides the fact, that there is a mistake now (he becomes -> they becomes), it is after all a historic book. Should we suggest to let it be moved to WikiSource? What do you think... --Andreas Ipp 09:40, 24 Jan 2005 (UTC) --Andreas 09:38, 24 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Hey mate, great spotting. I should have been more careful with my edits. I guess we could move it to wikisource if you really wanted, but we shouldn't take it off wikibooks, cause the plan is that it will grow and become more the the out-of-copyright book that it is now. Large parts of wikipedia had thier base in a 1908 (?) version of britanica which is now out of copyright. The point was not to put the text of britanica online, but to have it as a starting point to create something bigger and better. The bellman 06:50, 2005 Jan 25 (UTC)

[edit] Help Desk Question

Just in case you don't return to the help desk, I wanted to post you my reply since it took me a bit of work to type up.  :-)

I think you were right in the first place to dismiss this as a conspiracy theory. Here's why:
  1. Ford/GM/Pick-your-auto-company are in the business of selling cars. They are not in the business of selling oil or gasoline or desiel fuel. They have no interest in cars using up a lot of energy. It doesn't help them at all in their goal of selling more cars. In fact, it hurts their goal. The cost of buying the fuel has to be considered in the total cost of ownership for the vehicle. The higher the total cost of ownership, the fewer people can buy the car. If they want to sell more cars around the world, especially to developing nations where the people have less disposable income, then they want the total cost of ownership to be as low as possible.
  2. As pointed out above, the whole point of the patent system is that a company must disclose their invention in exchange for a limited monopoly. If they just let the invention sit there unused, one of 3 things will happen: (a) someone in another country with less respect for our intellectual property laws will just violate the patent (b) someone will sue the owner of the invention to force them to license it - again US law is designed around the notion of advancing society, so the courts are not sympathetic to people who lock up technology and refuse to license it (c) as soon as the patent expires, other people will bring the invention to market.
If we modify your question to suppose it was an an oil company, that the technology was not a more efficient car but rather a replacement for petroleum products, and that the invention was not patented but instead was held as a trade secret then this becomes a little more plausible. Still, oil companies are in competition with each other. They can't be sure that some other oil company on the other side of the world wouldn't independently invent the same thing. There is no security and no profit in keeping the invention hidden and not using it. They would be better off to take the invention to market and instantly make all their competitors obsolete. I don't want an edit war here, but at Mexican Revolution you removed the "expert" template, claiming it "doesn't exist". Since the template exists—template:expert—and (as you can see from its edit history) existed at that time as well, I am guessing this was some kind of good-faith error and am asking you to restore it. But I won't fight over this. - Jmabel | Talk 19:50, 24 September 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading [[:{{{1}}}]]. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{cc-by-sa-2.5}} to release it under the Creative Commons or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you.
