Theory of Avarice (Japanese: 「強欲の理論」 - Gouyoku no Riron) is episode 34 of the Fullmetal Alchemist TV series originally aired 2004-06-05.
Lt. Colonel Archer’s troops are holding Edward, Izumi and Sig in custody; Archer reinstates Shou Tucker as a State Alchemist under his command and orders his men to take no prisoners hunting down Greed and his associates. Greed, Dorochet and Loa (who is still carrying Alphonse with Marta inside), are intercepted in the sewers by Major Armstrong. After a brief battle with Armstrong, Loa smashes a hole in the tunnel wall through which Greed’s party escapes. Lust and Gluttony arrive at the cabin they are hiding in; Loa and Dorochet send Greed, Al and Marta away and make a last stand to buy them time; they are stabbed by Lust and eaten by Gluttony.
Greed arrives at Dante’s house, unsure of his own motivation for doing so. He finds Lyra, who knows that Dante created him; the eviscerated corpse of Dante; and the remains of the human from whom he was transmuted. The remains weaken him, and the transmutation circle Lyra activates makes him vomit up all of the incomplete Philosopher’s Stones he’s ever consumed, further enervating him. Having escaped from custody, Ed arrives at Dante’s house, sees her corpse, and assumes Greed killed her. Stubborn to the end, Greed refuses to tell Ed what happened there, or where Alphonse is. They begin to fight, but Edward has figured out the secret of Greed’s “Ultimate Shield”—Greed can form the carbon in his body into different allotropes, namely diamond. Ed transmutes the diamond into a softer form and stabs Greed through the chest. Dying, Greed admits that Al is unharmed, and that he had left him in the forest, and tells Ed how to weaken a homunculus. He hopes that Ed will kill all the other homunculi and he is counting on him. Never having killed anyone before (except Majahal, but that was an accident) in his life, Edward is devastated and screams.
Edward, Alphonse and Winry say their farewells to Izumi and Sig. They’re going to continue looking for the Ishbalan refugees in hope of discovering another means of forging the Philosopher's Stone.
