The Journalist's Questions: Who? What? Why? When? Where? How? The following are the questions that journalists answer when generating ideas for a story. You may find them helpful in business communication as well, particularly for policy, process, or procedural topics. For instance, if you need to write a memo describing a change in company policy, you would want to establish the following: 1. To whom does the policy apply? 2. What exactly is the policy? What has changed? 3. Why is the policy in place? Why have the changes been made? 4. When does the policy take effect? 5. Where would people needing more information obtain it? 6. How would they obtain it?
