[edit] History
Founded by its previous Head, Barbara Goodwin-Zeibots, The York School opened in 1965 as a pre-Kindergarten programme, grew steadily until 1978 when both a toddler and an elementary programme began and then opened its first Grade 9 class in the fall of 1995. Now, York occupies a unique position among Toronto-area independent schools. York is co-educational, non-denominational, provides Grades 1 through university entrance and offers both the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma in the last two years of high school as well as the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) from pre-K to Grade 6 and the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) for Grade 7 to Grade 10. York's uniqueness is further enhanced by its new location as a Manhattan-style school in mid-town Toronto with easy access to community parks and the main subway and bus lines. The York School was the first school in Canada to offer all of the IB programs(PYP)(MYP)(IB).
[edit] Philosophy
The York School's integrated programme develops concepts and skills sequentially throughout the grades, so that all students are being prepared for the challenges of the future. The programme is further strengthened by the faculty's ongoing involvement in curriculum research and design. In striving for academic excellence, the school develops strong skills in literacy, numeracy, critical thinking, research, problem-solving and communication. Integration of computer technology enhances the curriculum. Academics are balanced and complemented by strong programmes in art, music, physical education and athletics. All students are given the means to achieve to the best of their abilities.
Faculty, students and parents form a closely-knit community, working together to provide a secure and supportive environment. The dignity and self-esteem of the individual student is paramount. The school's code of conduct is based on personal responsibility and respect for others.
Students at The York School have opportunities to take risks, to voice opinions and to effect changes within the school environment. They participate in activities which promote social and multicultural awareness, cooperation and leadership and which will prepare them for the challenges of a more complex society.
[edit] Academics
The academic year begins in mid-September, ends in mid-June, and is divided into three terms. Reporting to parents takes place four times a year with two effort reports and two achievement reports.
All York students study English and French, mathematics, history, geography and science along with strong programmes in physical education, music and art. In all areas of academics, York is committed to providing each student with in-depth opportunities to use modern technology to maximize the learning process.
