The World of David the Gnome was an animated television series. Based on the world-famous children's books The Gnomes and The Secret of the Gnomes, by the Dutch author Wil Huygen and illustrator Rien Poortvliet, the program was originally created in Spain by BRB Internacional (who were also responsible for the Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds franchise) with animation by Canadian studio Cinar (now Cookie Jar Entertainment), titled David el Gnomo, and retains a sense of the lush illustrations of the original books. 32 episodes were produced. There was also a "second season" of sorts entitled La llamada de los Gnomos, or Wisdom of the Gnomes.

David, the patriarch of the Gnome clan, was something of a pacifist, since he usually avoided trouble rather than put up a fight. This wasn't an attitude of cowardice, but rather a faith in Gnome- and Troll-kind. He was convinced that goodness would eventually prevail, and he was determined to do his part. He was often joined in his adventures by his wife Lisa as well as a loyal fox named Swift.

The World of David the Gnome was narrated by Christopher Plummer, of The Sound of Music and The Insider fame. For United States viewers, the voice of David the Gnome was redubbed with the voice of Tom Bosley, and features an original opening theme song which is repeated in the end credits (mostly instrumental except for the finale).

David the Gnome came to United States television in 1987, running weekdays on the Nickelodeon cable channel, and was part of the fledgling Nick Jr. lineup when that was created shortly thereafter. It was also broadcast in 1996 on The Learning Channel until 1998. The series is still frequently shown on weekday mornings on Irish channel RTÉ Two as of 2006. In Australia, it has aired on ABC and it had been on Australian Television. David the Gnome is the first Nickelodeon show to have books and videos released by ABC. A DVD release is expected.
