The White Room is a alternative rock band from Geelong, Victoria, Australia. Originally named Plunja they were formed in Melbourne by brother and sister Marc Collis (lead vocalist/guitarist) and Steph Collis (drums/backing vocalist). When they were still children they encouraged their friend Ben Jarvis to learn the guitar so he could join them. In 1998 the three teenagers decided to expand their band by adding a bass guitar player, eventually deciding on Barry Brauer.

[edit] Name

Their name is can be attributed to the room in which The Beatles wrote their most infamous album The White Album. They changed their name to The White Room from their former name Plunja as they wanted to turn over a new leaf after feeling unhappy with their previous music. They felt they had been focusing to much energy on fitting into the musical genre Nu Metal and they wanted to branch out into other areas. They also felt that their previous work was too over produced and wanted their recordings to better reflect their live sound.

[edit] Awards

Marc was awarded 'Most Outstanding Individual Talent' in the 1998 Kool Skools Challenge. In March 2000 they played in the state final of The Push battle of the bands at Luna Park with Killing Heidi and 28 Days. They also won the Pako Festival 2000 Battle of the Bands where Steph won the award for "Most Talented Individual". Also in 2000 they won the Geelong Radio station K-ROCK battle of the bands.

[edit] History

Marc Collis originally started the band as a child when he became bored with writing music alone in his room. He asked his younger sister Steph Collis to play the drum kit that their father had actually bought for their toddler brother. While they were only in grade 5 of primary school Marc asked his friend Ben Jarvis to learn the guitar. Marc would send Ben tapes of songs they had written so that he could practice without them present.

The White Room officially became a band in 1998 when they added a bass guitar player to their line-up. Their original choice was Marc and Stephs cousin but she wasn't serious enough about the music and decided to leave in late 1999. She was replaced in 2000 by local musician Barry Brauer.

Plunja received an overwhelming response at the Kool Skools 2000 award night at Festival Hall and the 2001 Awards at the Metro on George in Sydney, where they performed as special guests. Marc had previously been awarded 'Most Outstanding Individual Talent' in 1998 as part of Kool Skools. They have also had the experience of playing live at the MCG as part of a youth event which was attended by the Victorian Governor.

In 2004 they were opening act for Nickelback on their Australian tour which gave The White Room great exposure and gained them many fans across the country. This was their fist experience on a major tour and their many years of experience greatly helped them as they played to the large crowds. Marc has stated that playing with Nickelback and seeing that they were all regular guys is one of the highlights of his career.

As Plunja they released a number of demos and an album titled "Aloud to Bruise" in 1999. In 2000 they released a self titled EP (Under the name Plunja) and a 2004 EP titled "Three Colours". Since changing their name to The White Room they have released the single "Enemies Closer" through record stores and the EP "Vicious Girl" which they made available for download from their website http://www.thewhiteroom.com.au.

Their much anticipated second album "White Room Music" was released on the 12th of August 2006. It was originally set for release earlier in the year under the title "The 11th Hour" but the date was consistently changed. This was their first album in eight years and delves deeply into the difficult life of vocalist Marc Collis.
