The Westword
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Westword is the student-run newspaper of Westhill High School in Stamford, CT. Started in the early 1970s by Gary Stanek, the paper went on to become a nationally-acclaimed student publication. In 2004, Stanek stepped down as the newspaper's advisor and was replaced by David Wooley. Currently, The Westword has a staff of over 70 students. Its issues, generally 40-56 pages, are produced monthly and mailed to a circulation of over 3000 students, parents, and faculty. The Westword's website has over two thousand community members on its distribution list and typically receives over 150,000 hits per month. www.TheWestword.org is under construction. The current Editor-in-Chief is Andy Granowitz (a pretty cool kid), a longtime staff member.
The Westword currently boasts several of its graduates in the ranks of esteemed college publications. Jake Sherman, a 2004 graduate, is the sports editor at The GW Hatchet. Sherman won a 2006 Society of Professional award for sports writing. Joanna Shapes, a former editor of the paper, is the assistant sports editor at the same publication at George Washington University.
Inna Lifshin is a staff writer at The Daily Pennsylvanian. Lifshin served as managing editor in 2005.
