"The Warriors of Kyoshi" is an episode from the animated television series Avatar: The Last Airbender, which airs on Nickelodeon. It is the fourth episode of the first season of the series.
During one of Aang's little detours, the group heads toward the island of Kyoshi. However, they soon learn that the townspeople do not trust foreigners, fearing Fire Nation spies, and the Kyoshi Island Warriors quickly subdue and bind the gang. Fortunately, when Aang proves to them that he is the Avatar, they are treated as guests of honor. Katara wants to get some supplies and leave as soon as possible, while Aang is enjoying his time as a celebrity, but little do they know that the Fire Nation has been following them. Also, Sokka meets and trains with a female warrior named Suki.
[edit] Episode synopsis
The episode starts with Zuko’s ship sailing. Zuko is meditating when Iroh comes in with information about the Avatar. Iroh tells Zuko not to get angry, and Zuko says he can control his temper. Iroh says he doesn’t know where the Avatar is, and Zuko gets really angry.
Meanwhile, Aang, Katara, and Sokka are flying on the back of Appa. Katara is sewing Sokka’s trousers, while Aang is trying to get her attention. Because she’s busy, she ignores him. Sokka makes a chauvinistic comment, and Katara throws his trousers back at him.
They land, and Aang wants to show Katara his moves by riding on an Elephant Koi. He is almost attacked by a Unagi eel, but fortunately he runs away. After he dresses up they are attacked by a group of people. They are then tied to a big pole and, after having removed the cloth covering Aang, Katara and Sokka’s eyes, Sokka has to make a comment because he realizes he was attacked by girls.
The girls say the island is called Kyoshi, and that it is named after the Avatar Kyoshi. Aang tells them he knows her because he is the Avatar. They don’t believe him and say that he should be an air bender if he’s the Avatar. Aang shows them his powers and they realize who he is.
The news of the Avatar in town travels from person to person, and news finally reaches Zuko and Iroh. Aang and Katara are eating and the town's people are cleaning up the statue of Kyoshi. Aang shows off to the young women of Kyoshi, and they chase him around.
Sokka goes to the warriors, and he is asked if he wants to show off some of his moves. He tries, but he is beaten by a female warrior named Suki. Sokka asks her to train him and she accepts, but Sokka has to dress up in their clothes. Katara is practicing her water bending and Sokka is training and battling Suki.
Aang is with the kids, but they get bored of him and leave. Aang goes to Katara and he apologizes to her. Aang plays with the fish again and he is attacked by the same giant fish. He is knocked unconscious and Katara goes to him. She saves him with her water bending skills. Zuko comes with his ship. Sokka’s training is complete and he tries to help fight but is told to go.
Aang, Katara and Sokka leave as the town is being set on fire, and the soldiers follow. Aang jumps down from Appa and uses the Unagi that attacked him. He uses it to spray water on the town to put out the fires before he leaves, and then they fly away.
[edit] Notes
- The warriors of Kyoshi Island dress in the same robes, wear the same make up and use the same weapons as Avatar Kyoshi. Though all others seem to sport their own hairstyle, Suki's hair was done in such a way that she looked like a younger version of Kyoshi herself.
- The Kyoshi uniform that Sokka wore has a golden button of the right arm guard that with the word 京 (jīng), which means 'capital.' In Japanese, it also stands for "kyō".
- Unagi is the Japanese word for freshwater eel.
