From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Wackiest Ship in the Army was a short-lived American television sitcom series that ran from 1965 to 1966 on NBC. It was loosely based on the 1960 film of the same title starring Jack Lemmon.

The series was set in the Pacific theater of World War II and centered around the crew of the USS Kiwi, a leaky wooden twin-masted schooner whose mission was to place spies behind Japanese lines. The Kiwi was jointly commanded by Major Simon Butcher (Jack Warden) and Lieutenant Richard "Rap" Riddle (Gary Collins).

Guest stars over the 29 episodes of the series included Jill Ireland, Robert Loggia, Harry Morgan, Chips Rafferty and George Takei.

[edit] Trivia

The USS Kiwi was based on the real-life USS Echo, a 50 year old schooner that was transferred from the New Zealand government to the US Navy in 1942. It was returned to the New Zealand government in 1944.
