With an ambition to always evolve, yet retain elements of the deftly crafted fusion of metal, hardcore and melodies that The Valley showcased on the band’s well-received debut EP, A Small Misunderstanding Leads To Disaster, the group have achieved the goal with their anticipated follow up EP, Burning At The Mistake.

After forming in early 2005, the Sydney quintet started making its mark in the Australian music scene with their first demo and interstate tours. A number of labels soon began to take notice, and The Valley signed to Crusade Records in late 2005. Crusade Records released A Small Misunderstanding Leads To Disaster, to rave reviews in February 2006, and the band toured rigorously, only stopping briefly when original vocalist Simon French and guitarist Pete Campbell decided to leave the group. “It was really hard losing a singer and a guitarist.” Drummer Tim Glastonbury says. “I remember the night they left. Us remaining guys just got together and we were determined to continue on and not let anything hold us back.”

With bassist Shaun Pretorius filling the vacant position on guitar, the band recruited Scott Tarasenko (Vocals) and James Taylor (Bass). “When James and Scottie joined, we all hit it off musically and personally.” Tim says. “We were thankful to have all round awesome dudes joining the band.” Ready to hit the stage again, The Valley road tested the new line-up on a successful 3-month national tour, sharing stages with the likes of The Bleeders, I Killed The Prom Queen, Gyroscope, Horsell Common, Behind Crimson Eyes, Carpathian and The Hot Lies among others. The new line-up quickly proved why its live show has become one that is not to be missed. dB Magazine called the electrifying experience “Truly breath-taking”. Following the tour, The Valley had a short break to write new material and record Burning At The Mistake.

Entering Kingtone Studios in Sydney during August and September 2006, the band teamed up with engineer/producer Pete King to record Burning At The Mistake. “Working with Pete was great because he has such an amazing ear for any style of music.” Tim says. “Pete really brought his expertise into the studio to get us the sound we wanted to capture. We are stoked with the outcome.” Burning At The Mistake takes the tantalizing metal and melodic hardcore elements from A Small Misunderstanding Leads To Disaster and turns it up a notch. The result is a scintillating mix of intricate and blistering riffs, thunderous rhythms and new vocalist Scott Tarasenko’s guttural growls and striking clean vocals. Lyrically, the band steers clear of the well-worn path of death, destruction and hopelessness, and instead they choose to convey lyrics that are uplifting and positive. The main theme running throughout the EP is bringing hope into a world with so much negativity and self-centeredness.

The Valley will be embarking on their first national headlining tour with The Amity Affliction in Oct/Nov/Dec. During the tour, The Valley will also be appearing at Soundfest in Canberra on November 25 alongside From Autumn To Ashes, The Bled and Parkway Drive. The rest of 2006 and early 2007 will see the band continue to tour virtually non-stop in support of Burning At The Mistake. For the loyal fan base the band has already built through their irrefutable hard work ethic, Burning At The Mistake is the next logical step in The Valley’s evolution.
