[edit] Plot
Terry Wolfmeyer (Allen) thinks that her husband has left her and run away with another woman to Sweden, and she has to raise her four daughters by herself. She finds herself in a mess of alcohol and anger. Denny Davies (Costner) is her neighbor, a retired baseball player who starts off as her drinking buddy but ends up as a romantic interest. Terry's daughters are left to deal with their mother's relationship and the changing family dynamics. At the end of the film they find that her husband had fallen into a hole in the back portion of their large property.
[edit] Trivia
- At the wedding scene, the band plays "Try a little tenderness" and after singing the first couple of lines, the singer hums, as if he forgot the lyrics. This is a cross-movie joke as this was the same song featured in Bull Durham, where Kevin Costner's character gets upset with another player for not knowing the words to "Try a little tenderness"
- Another cross-movie reference... When Terry goes to Danny's house to clean, she holds up a poster of Danny in a Detroit Tigers uniform. Costner played a Detroit Tiger in the movie "For Love of the Game".
- The characted played by Kevin Costner is loosely based on former Detroit Tigers Denny McLain and Kirk Gibson. Mike Binder was born and raised in Detroit and often incorporates the city or the Tigers into his films.
