The UC Merced Library
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Library was the first building to open on campus. During Fall of 2005 all academic courses were conducted in the Library.
The Library building is named for Leo and Dottie Kolligian. The first floor of the library was dedicated by Ed and Jeanne Kashian. The McFadden-Willis Reading Room is located on the fourth floor and named in honor of the McFadden and Willis children by Christine McFadden. The Library also has a state-of-the-art technology classroom dedication by Doris Gonella in honor of her late husband Louis, The Gonella Discovery Room.
The official motto of the Library is "Not what other research libraries are, what they will be."
With a café located on the first floor and doors that role up on nice days providing an indoor/outdoor feel it is not your traditional academic library.
Rather than confine students to computer labs the library provides over 100 laptop computers for checkout, allowing students to study and write in the environment that is most appropriate to their needs. The Library demonstrates its difference from other academic libraries by not binding print volumes of journals, rather subscribing electronically, providing students, faculty and staff with 24 hour access to these resources. Currently, the electronic holdings are more than three times the size of the print holdings, consisting of about 15,000 Online Journals and 150,000 Electronic Books to 46,000 print books.
Most academic libraries employee large staffs, the UC Merced Library has an impressive small staff of 7 librarians and 7 library staff. The librarians take an active role in campus activities; working closely with faculty on a variety levels, offering a seminar on digital communication, serving as advisors for student clubs, even hosting many campus events in the building and of course as "the gatekeepers of information."
The Library strongly supports the idea and use of Wikipedia in the proper environment. "One of the greatest accomplishments and challenges that Wikipedia has encountered is the idea of ownership. There is no one owner of the ever changing content of Wikipedia, but rather a community of information seekers and providers."
